Peter Mukerjea, the former media mogul and CEO of Star India, once held significant influence in the Indian television industry. However, his life took a dramatic turn due to his involvement in the infamous Sheena Bora murder case, where his ex-wife Indrani Mukerjea was the prime accused.
After spending over four years in jail, Peter Mukerjea was granted bail in March 2020. So, what is his current whereabouts and what is he up to? Here’s an overview of his present circumstances and past struggles.
The Sheena Bora Murder Case
The Sheena Bora murder case sent shockwaves across India in 2015 when Indrani Mukerjea, a former media executive and founder of INX Media, was arrested for allegedly murdering her daughter Sheena Bora in 2012.
Sheena, Indrani’s daughter from a previous marriage, was introduced as Indrani’s sister to Peter Mukerjea and his family. Sheena was also romantically involved with Peter’s son Rahul Mukerjea, unbeknownst to him.
Indrani, along with her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai, allegedly strangled Sheena, burned her body, and dumped it in a forest near Mumbai. The case came to light when Rai, arrested in an unrelated case, confessed to his involvement.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Peter Mukerjea in November 2015, alleging his complicity in the conspiracy and aiding Indrani in covering up the crime.
The CBI asserted that Peter and Indrani embezzled funds from INX Media and deposited them in an offshore account under Sheena’s name. The murder was purportedly motivated by a property dispute and Indrani’s disapproval of Sheena’s relationship with Rahul. The case is pending trial, with hundreds of witnesses and extensive evidence.
Peter Mukerjea’s Bail and Release
Peter Mukerjea endured four and a half years at Arthur Road Jail, where he underwent heart surgery in 2018. He penned a memoir titled “Star Struck: Confessions of a TV Executive,” published in 2021, detailing his ascent in the media industry and his involvement in the murder case.
Despite his release on bail by the Bombay High Court in March 2020, Peter had to comply with several conditions, including surrendering his passport, refraining from contacting witnesses or co-accused, and reporting to the CBI office monthly.
Peter Mukerjea’s Present Life
According to a Mid Day report, Peter Mukerjea presently resides in Mumbai, engaging in writing, cultivating organic vegetables, and pursuing physical fitness, with aspirations of participating in a half-marathon.
He expressed satisfaction in reclaiming his freedom and emphasized his disconnection from Indrani and Rahul. Peter anticipates the trial to vindicate his innocence.
Peter Mukerjea also features in a Netflix documentary, “The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth,” released in 2024. Although he declined participation, the documentary delves into Indrani Mukerjea’s life and crimes through interviews with acquaintances and investigators.
Peter Mukerjea’s journey has been tumultuous, transitioning from media magnate to murder accused. His future hinges on the trial’s outcome, slated to resume soon, determining whether he can clear his name.
